SAVF in Standerton appoints a new social worker
Her uncle realised her ambitions and paid for her studies in her first year and thereafter, a scholarship from the Department of Social Development paved the way.
The SAVF in town welcomed a new social worker to its ranks.
Ms Hlengiwe Meisie Mazibuko hails from Hazyview in the Lowveld, saw some of the country during her university years in Limpopo, and finds Standerton quite appealing.
“The town does not confuse a newcomer,” she said.
One of the most important facts about Meisie is that her grandmother, Gladys, raised her.
Both her parents passed away when she was still young and Gladys at 63 is still spry, though arthritis sometimes takes its toll.
“She is excited about my new job,” Meisie also said.
Meisie is fully aware of the challenges facing a single woman, with children, in keeping the home fires burning.
She enrolled at the University of Venda in Thohoyandou in 2014 and completed a BA in Social Work three years later.
The first three months were spent in a hostel. Her uncle realised her ambitions and paid for her studies in her first year and thereafter, a scholarship from the Department of Social Development paved the way.
Meisie graduated on 16 May 2018 and her journey to employment at the SAVF happened seemingly overnight.
She applied for the vacancy in January, sent her CV, was called for an interview on 2 February and arrived on the 8th for the interview.
Family bonds will not go astray since her home in Kosmospark is not far from where one of her half-sisters, who moved to Secunda, lives.
The young woman has already calculated the cost of living here.
Comparison-wise, Standerton’s commodities such as fruit, especially bananas, are more expensive than those in Hazyview.
“Hair extensions will cost about R150 in Hazyview and here you have to fork out at least R350,” she commented.
On the bright side however, clothes are more affordable.
Meisie will mainly focus on the shelter in Schwickard Street in Standerton and her portfolio includes the women’s group.
“I enjoy the quiet of the town,” the new kid on the block said.
