No backing for DA-plan in Secunda

DA councillors were and are prepared to lose their monthly salaries.

HIGHVELD – Govan Mbeki Municipality held an ordinary virtual council meeting on 25 February.

Items for discussion included Eskom and Rand Water accounts, the Section 106 forensic investigation report and the appointment of a new director of planning and development.

The DA’s motion of disbandment of the Govan Mbeki Municipal council was tabled, but the motion was only supported by FF Plus, as other opposition parties abstained from voting after a lengthy debate.

“DA councillors were and are prepared to lose their monthly salaries in order to give Govan Mbeki Municipality residents an earlier chance to elect the government of their choice and to relieve them from the plight they are facing under ANC- led municipality, because its councillors chose themselves over residents,” said Mr James Masango, DA councillor.

The EFF said the municipality does not want to open cases for the Section 106 forensic investigation report as per the recommendations.

“The ANC is exposed, as the municipal officials are still operating the same as before the investigation. Politicians and officials are employing unqualified friends and families.

“These council meetings do not assist our communities, but assist politicians and officials with a legal route to loot,” said Mr Thabiso Mofokeng, EFF councillor.

Recently, Govan Mbeki appeared before the parliamentary committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) to interact about the state of the municipality.

It was revealed that the municipality is under administration of Section 139(1)(b).

The parliamentary committee demanded at the meeting that the municipality must come up with a Section 106 implementation
plan.
