Ms Rosie Msibi and Ms Carla Botha are newly trained professionals at a beauty salon in Standerton.
The owner, Ms Ronel Starbuck, made the trip to Montana Park, Pretoria with her charges to complete their online theoretical and practical examination.
Ms Msibi has made the career change from domestic worker to beauty consultant.
The mother of two children left Vereeniging and arrived in Standerton in December 2019.
“I have been ironing for 20 years,” she said. She is originally all the way from Platrand and no stranger to town, now living in Mahala Park with her family.
Her oldest son is studying at Gert Sibande College and the younger one a learner at iGugulabasha Primary School.
An advertisement made her apply for a job at the salon in town and she was roped in after a few months in the nitty-gritty of slimming and laser treatment.
“I enjoy it very much,” the woman in the sparkling clean outfit added.
Rosie quickly answered the off-hand question about exercise since she walks from the township to the salon on weekday mornings, and only would hail a taxi on certain days.
No customer has yet proven to be difficult.
Her colleague, Ms Botha, did the necessary welcoming and introductions at the salon. With a past that had some surprises in store, the future looks promising.
“I would like to own my own beauty salon in 10 years time. A woman has to begin at the top, with her hair and move on to her make-up.”
Carla Botha left the world of academics with qualifications in Industrial Psychology and Labour Relations obtained at the Potch-campus of the North-West University.
With two honours degrees to her name, she worked as in intern psychometrist in the psychology department for 10 years.
The expiry of her contract, catapulted her into applying her creativity to the beauty business. “Because I worked for such a long time with psychology, the change appeals to me,” Carla said.
“I want to build women up to make them aware of their inner beauty as well.”
She was a learner at Hoƫrskool Standerton en returned to town in 2019. Carla strongly believes that make-up should be put on properly to reach a state of flawlessness. On her to-do-list is a course in holistic massage.
“Aiming for outward, as well inner beauty, involves a psychological process,” the woman said, who did some modelling in her time.
Future-wise, a strong social awareness will probably lead her into something different. “I want to make a change in the lives of women,” Carla concluded.
