SECUNDA – With sirens blaring, the local fire department paid a visit to the learners of Oranjegloed Primary School on Monday, 4 May.
This formed part of a celebration to honour these heroes on International Firefighters’ Day.
“GMM Fire and Rescue Services thanked Mr Hannes Malan, Head of Department, together with everyone at Oranjegloed Primary School, for celebrating International Firefighters’ Day with us and for honouring us for the special, dangerous and difficult tasks we have to do on a daily base,” said Mr Douw Botha, senior station officer.
He said that these school visits form part of GMM’s Fire and Rescue Services Awareness Campaigns, where they educate the community, especially the younger generation, about fire safety in and around their school, house and community.
This also gives them a little broader background of what firefighting is all about.
“It’s a fun educational event which leaves deep footprints in our youngsters’ hearts and if we can save lives through these fun educational events, we have succeeded in our goal and will keep improving as we move forward,” said Mr Botha.
The school treated the firefighters to cupcakes and a hero badge to show their appreciation.
Firefighters showed the learners how to stop, drop and roll and also taught them the important number when they are in a crisis.
The school thanked the firefighting team who are always willing to help in emergencies.
