Heaps of educational material goes up in flames in Ermelo

ERMELO – Heaps of dumped educational material went up in flames in an open field in John Streicher Avenue in Ermelo recently.
From Department of Basic Education work books to school stationery, the majority of the materials burned to ashes when on July 3, a veld fire ravaged the field where it was dumped.
According to a resident who lives in the area, he is unsure about how the veld fire began, however, many residents complained about papers that were scattered all over.
Some of the sealed packages of textbooks that were not burnt had a sticker on it which were dated 2015 and addressed to Injomane Primary School in Chrissiesmeer and Amersfoort Primary School.
Workbooks and textbooks were in various South African languages.
It is still not known why the materials were dumped in the field.
Mr Gerald Sambo, spokesman of Mpumalanga Department of Education, responded to enquiries sent to him.
