Two toddlers die in house fire in Amersfoort after guardian allegedly leaves them to go to the shop

The guardian arrived back from the shop and informed the neighbours that the children were inside the burning house.

AMERSFOORT – Two toddlers both aged two-years-old, died in a house fire in Amersfoort on August 16, after they were left alone at home.

According to Col Donald Mdhluli, spokesman for Mpumalanga police, a boy and a girl (twins) along with their cousin (girl), were left in the care of a guardian, who allegedly left the children alone in the house to go to the shop.

The guardian apparently left the children with a candle still burning due to the area not having electricity.

Neighbours saw the flames at the house and called for help.

The guardian arrived back from the shop and informed the neighbours that the children were inside the burning house.

Emergency services arrived and managed to rescue the boy.

The two girls could however, not be saved and were later certified dead at the scene.

The boy was rushed to hospital.

An inquest case was opened at Amersfoort police and the case is being investigated.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieut Gen Semakaleng Manamela urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children are safe and cared for at all times.
