Family from eMzinoni loses everything in shack fire

A mother, her daughter and her granddaughter are left with nothing after a fire destroyed their shack on Saturday night, September 4.

The daughter, Ms Thandeka Swani (32), said all three of them were already asleep in bed at about 23:00 when they were awaken by the smell of smoke.

“We ran out of the house and called for help,” said Ms Swani.

Neighbours gave her, her mother, Ms Lydia Swani (54) and her daughter, Saint Swani (11) a place to sleep for the night and the community reached out and gave them a few needed items.

Ms Swani suspects that the fire was caused by electricity issues. The government is in the process of building the family a RDP house and they were told to move their shack.

“The municipality helped us to put up a small shack now, but there is nothing inside,” said Ms Swani.

All their belongings were destroyed in the fire and they have nothing inside of the small shack in which they  currently live.

The family needs furniture, beds, blankets, clothes, food and anything used to put up a new house.
