Inmates of Standerton Correctional Centre refurbish school desks

“During the assessment process, it was discovered that the school had a huge challenge of broken and disused desks for the learners.”

Management of the Standerton Correctional Centre adopted Khunjuliwe Secondary School as part of their social responsibility outreach programme.

The programme which began at the beginning of the year, saw Ms Gugu Myeza, head of Standerton Correctional Centre, leading her team to a visit to Khunjuliwe Secondary School.

They met with Ms Ntombifuthi Nkolongwane, principal of Khunjuliwe Secondary School, to do a needs audit and see where the Correctional Centre could assist.

“During the assessment process, it was discovered that the school had a huge challenge of broken and disused desks for the learners.

“The executive of the Correctional Centre, in collaboration with Gert Sibande College, undertook to refurbish the desks. Offenders would repair the desks and GS College would do the final finishing,” said Ms Patience Nkomo, acting manager for communications for Standerton Correctional Centre.

The executive of Bethal area management led by the acting area commissioner, Mr Dominic Zulu, Mr Chabi Sesoko, area coordinator corporate services and Ms Gugu Myeza, the head of Correctional Centre Standerton, went to hand over the 50 refurbished desks to Mr Charles Mokoena, deputy principal of Khunjuliwe Secondary School, on August 31.

The handing over of refurbished desks was done just in time for the learners who were in the processes of writing exams.

Ms Myeza committed herself to do more collaborative projects with the school in strengthening their stakeholder relations and to improve the conditions of the school where possible.
The deputy principal of the school thanked the executive of Bethal area management on behalf of the principal, teachers, learners and the school governing body.

In expressing his gratitude, Mr Mokoena stated that the work done by Standerton Correctional Centre and GS College will go a long way in helping the school and that the good gesture did not go unnoticed.
