Learners protest against racism at Hoërskool Secunda
School principal explains what happened.
Black learners from Hoërskool Secunda protested with posters outside the school this morning, September29.
They accused the school of racism.
Video’s and photos of the learners and protest were soon doing the rounds on social media.

Mr Lourens Pieterse, principal, said this protest action is a result of a disciplinary hearing that took place earlier this week.
“A boy was charged with racism and he was found guilty,” said Mr Pieterse.
“He was given a severe punishment, which includes expulsion.”
He further said the learners who took part in the protest today, were under the impression that this learner was not disciplined.

According to Mr Pieterse, members of the ANC, EFF and Cosatu went to the school and after a meeting with school management and all the learners, all the parties committed themselves to cooperate so that similar situations may be avoided.
Mr Pieterse said the school did not approve any video footage or photos that was taken by the protest.
“Hoërskool Secunda is committed to provide an educational environment for all learners that is free from any form of discrimination regardless of race, gender and faith.”
