Evander Gold Mine gives to GMM

“The country’s unemployment rate has hit rock bottom and further collapsed because of the pandemic which caused unemployment and poverty at a rate that has not been in a long time.”

Govan Mbeki Municipality received Social Labour Plan projects completed by the Evander Gold Mine on Tuesday, September 28.

Ms Livhu Ramuedzisi, human resource manager at Evander Gold Mine, said the projects are part of the mine’s social responsibility plan through the Department of Minerals and Energy.

She said they have installed six high mast lights at eMbalenhle and three solar high mast lights at Sakhisizwe communal land using their 2018/2022 social labour plan named the public lighting project.

This project was handed over to the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s executive mayor, Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma.

He thanked the Evander Gold Mine for installing high mast lights as their social responsibility plan because most areas in townships like eMbalenhle are very dark at nigh. He also thanked the mine for the solar high mast lights.

The mayor said the municipality is facing a challenge of cable theft and vandalism of infrastructure and they want to adopt a plan to install solar high mast lights, especially in those areas where cable theft is high.

He also said the municipality has amended their social plan which was prioritising the fight against sewage spill because of different interventions from the national and provincial government.

Mr Zuma said their main priority that they need Evander Gold Mine to consider in their coming Social Labour Plan, is waste management because they are seriously attending to sewage problems.

The mayor requested the mine to build a waste transfer station at eMbalenhle to fight waste that is all over the township.
