Man dies at Sasol Nitro plant

Water pump failure causes death.

A foreman of Sasol’s Nitro Plant died on Sunday, October 10 at about 11:45 while attending to a boiler water pump failure.

According to Sasol’s manager for media and communications, Ms Nomia Machebe, the man was switching boiler water pumps when there was high pressure release of hot water, leading to him sustaining injuries.

Four other Sasol employees who were also on the scene, were safely evacuated from the area and were taken to the medical centre at Sasol for medical attention.

Ms Machebe said the plant was barricaded and temporarily decommissioned after the incident.

“Sasol is working with the relevant authorities and begun with an investigation into the accident,” said Ms Machebe.

“The deceased man’s family and next to kin have been notified and Sasol will provide the necessary support to his family.

“Sasol remains committed to the health and safety of its employees, the community and the environment.”
