Learners and community members attend career expo in Bethal

In a graduation ceremony by DCS and MILZET that was part of the event, 10 community members were issued with certificates of completion and start-up kits who participated in Beauty and Nail Technician learnership programme.

The first career expo which was hosted by Bethal Management Area, Development and Care section on Thursday, October 28, had Grade 9-10 learners from Ikhethelo Secondary School, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) officials and members of the community attend the career exhibition.

The expo saw 120 learners attend the career exhibition together with their teachers.

Stakeholders such as the Agricultural Sector Education Training Authority (AGRISETA), Agricultural Research Council (ARC), MILZET Holdings, Energy and Water SETA and Department of Agriculture Rural Development Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) made presentations on what their organisation offers in terms of learnership programmes, careers and bursaries.

Mr Dominic Zulu, acting area commissioner said in a welcoming note: “Career exhibitions assist learners to select or do correct subject grouping in line with their chosen careers.”

Mr Mfanezwe Nkosi, acting area coordinator development and care said: “The main purpose of the career exhibition is to create awareness and promote career opportunities within the Department of Correctional Services especially in agriculture.”

He mentioned that everyone will be exposed to agricultural job opportunities and hopefully consider agriculture as a good career of choice.

Ms Pinky Masango who was one of the participants in the Beauty and Nail Technician learnership programme thanked DCS and MILZET Holdings for the opportunity and said that they will have a better chance of finding work now or have the opportunity to start their own businesses in their communities.

Ms Vutlhari Chauke, manager HRD, made a presentation about available job opportunities in DCS, Learnership, internship, experiential learning and bursaries for internal and external applicants.

“The exhibition was highly informative,” said a Grade10 learner from eMzinoni Secondary School.

She said that she loves agriculture and agricultural science is one of her subjects in school. She said with all the information relating to agriculture she had received, she is now on the right path to pursue her future career.

Mr Maxwell, the agricultural science teacher from eMzinoni Secondary School said the career expo is important especially to the learners they become exposed as early as grade 9 and 10 and they benefit a lot in career options.

Mr Lucky Sithole, manager of agriculture, said: “The career exhibition was part of the contribution made in line with National Development Plan of 2030 and this will ensure that self-sufficiency is maintained.

All stakeholders and the learners were thanked for their participation in the exhibition.

“I hope you are going back home to start planning about your future with the information you gained today,” said Mr Enock Chonco, head of the correctional centre.
