Because Dogs & Co supports local entrepreneur

Mr Nkabinde makes a variety of shapes and sizes of kennels that are made out of wood, conveyer belts, and grass and put together with rope.

Local animal non-profitable organisation, Because Dogs & Co has joined hands with Bethal resident, Mr Elfast Nkabinde, who builds dog kennels.

Mr Nkabinde makes a variety of shapes and sizes of kennels that are made out of wood, conveyer belts and grass and put together with rope.

The thatched dog kennels provide animals with much-needed shelter during rain and shade from hot weather.

Because Dogs & Co has many projects where there is a huge need for shelter for animals and came across Mr Nkabinde who makes these kennels at a special cost for the organisation.

In support of small local businesses, Because Dogs & Co has agreed to R200 a kennel.

“Mr Nkabinde is a rural resident that Ms Dada Pieterse, who is an animal activist, introduced us to,” said Ms Chantél Vorster of Because Dogs & Co.

Ms Pieters and Because Dogs & Co are among the founders of a campaign called #PROJECTUTHANDO that teaches owners the importance of sterilising and how to look after their pets.

“We assisted Mr Nkabinde with the sterilisation of his dogs,” said Ms Vorster.

She said he is so good in what he does and he is extremely chuffed with his creation.

“Mr Nkabinde originally built one of these kennels for his own dogs and Ms Pieterse sent me a photo of the kennel he built,” said Ms Vorster.

It was then that Ms Vorster asked Ms Pieterse if there was a possibility Mr Nkabinde would consider making these types of kennels for their organisation.

There are different sizes and shapes to cater for all dogs of all sizes.

“Before we gave out one of the kennels, it was tested in the rain. The kennel is waterproof.

“There are extra layers of grass to stop water from leaking in and is high enough off the ground to stop water from seeping into the kennel,” said Ms Vorster.

She said it is about supporting locals.

“We are handing these kennels out to families with dogs that have been sterilised by us and have little to no shelter.

“We plan to replace their insufficient kennels with these,” said Ms Vorster.

She said when giving out steel kennels, their biggest challenge is that the steel is taken to a scrap yard. She sees these grass kennels as an alternative.

Because Dogs & Co assists in animal welfare in rural areas where there is a huge need for kennels.

“It is very important to have proper kennels that are elevated off the ground and is weather resistant. This is all these dogs have,” said Ms Vorster.

She said there are a lot of cases of sick dogs because they are being left out in the rain.
