The latest Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) weekly state of reservoirs report, dated December 13 shows that the average water levels in the listed dams in Mpumalanga recorded a major improvement from last week’s 74,6% to 85,0%.
According to their media statement, all the listed dams in the Gert Sibande District recorded improvements in water levels, with Grootdraai Dam increasing from 88,2% to 101,9%, Nooitgedacht from 100,0% to 101,8%, Vygeboom from 96,6% to 102,1%, Jericho from 81,0% to 82,1%, Westoe from 37,0% to 37,8%, Morgenstond from 82,7% to 86,7% and Heyshope from 91,3% to 93,9%.
The department encouraged the public to continue using water wisely and more conservatively despite the falling rain as South Africa is a dry and water scarce country.
“Let us also make use of the falling rain and practice rainwater harvesting to ensure that the rainwater does not go to waste as every drop counts,” the statement read.
“Water has no substitute therefore let us all be responsible water users.”
They also encouraged the public to be extra careful during the rain and avoid flooded areas to prevent the loss of important lives and property.
