Explosion at mini-sub after blanket catches fire

Oil was leaking inside the transformer and kept on igniting the fire.

An explosion at the mini-sub next to FNB in Princess Street on Wednesday, December 15 at about 7:00 caused a power outage in the CBD.

Standerton Fire Brigade and Jeria Ambulance Services were on the scene at 7:15.

Lekwa Municipality was also on the scene.

According to the firefighters, a homeless man left his blanket/s inside the substation.

A fire was started on the pavement and the blanket caught fire.

The ambulance services transported the man to Standerton Hospital.

According to them, he sustained burn wounds to his right hand and face.

According to Kasselman Security Services, the fire brigade sprayed the transformer with water.

Oil was leaking inside the transformer and kept on igniting the fire.

Electricity in the surrounding areas was affected, but restored just before 8:00.
