Dr Karl Strauss is a new surgeon in Trichardt

He is excited to see what Secunda has to offer and feels at home since moving to Secunda with his wife, Ms Mariska Strauss, and their four-year-old son.

Dr Karl Strauss recently traded Stellenbosch for Secunda and is the new orthopaedic surgeon at Mediclinic Highveld.

He grew up in Pretoria and spent about seven years of his early childhood in Uruguay and Chile in South America where he learnt to speak Spanish fluently.

When his parents returned to South Africa, they settled in Natal and Dr Strauss finished his primary school and high school days in Pietermaritzburg and Durban respectively.

Dr Strauss first studied chemical engineering in Stellenbosch but quickly realised that it was not really what he wanted to do and he changed his course to study medicine.

He also knew early during his university years that he did not only want to become a general practitioner, but he wanted to specialise.

He was awarded cum laude for his masters degree in medicine and his FC Orth (SA), the final examination to become an orthopaedic surgeon.

He was enrolled as a special student during his community service years and specialised in Stellenbosch before he opened a private practice in partnership with the well-known surgeon who operated on many Springbok rugby players and other sportsmen, Dr Spike Erasmus.

Dr Strauss gained a lot of experience in especially knee operations and other sport-related injuries since 2016 at his private practice.

However, he also continued to perform general orthopaedic surgery.

He is excited to see what Secunda has to offer and feels at home since moving to Secunda with his wife, Ms Mariska Strauss, and their four-year-old son.

“The people here are so friendly, helpful and welcoming,” said Dr Strauss.

“It gives us a sense of community, well done to the people of Secunda.”

Dr Strauss is an avid sportsman and since his school years has taken part in athletics, powerlifting competitions, rugby and water polo.

“In Natal where I grew up, you can swim before you can walk.”

In his free time, he also enjoys working out at the gymnasium and taking part in motorsports, mountain biking and shooting competitions.

If he and his wife get the opportunity to go away for a weekend, they enjoy doing 4×4 routes.

The new surgeon in town can do a broad spectrum of work, including arthroscopic surgery, keyhole surgery, replacements, sports injuries, trauma injuries and reconstructive surgery.

His practice is located at Mediclinic Highveld.
