Govan Mbeki Municipality’s executive mayor, Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma, members of the mayoral committee and councillors unveiled a new pressure jet truck to fight sewer spillages on Friday, January 14.
The mayor said the municipality continues to expand its capacity to render services.
He is happy that the new council has also inherited the trend to build the capacity of the municipality for service delivery.
“We all know that we are troubled by sewer spills in our community. This caused us not to look very good because we transgressed issues related to human rights.”
Mr Zuma said the council took this positive initiative to respond to sewer challenges.
He said the municipality spent a lot of money hiring this type of equipment at R7 000 an hour.
“That’s why we are happy that we are now going to perform that function ourselves.
“Ward councillors will now have less frustration of getting assistance with sewage spill or sanitation,” said Mr Zuma.
Mr Zuma also said the jet truck is a piece of highly technological equipment and the employee that will operate it, is currently undergoing two-week training.
He said now there will be less sewage frustration for the community and the integrity of the residents will be restored.
The mayor said the pressure jet truck cost the municipality between R4 million and R7 million.
He said it is rare equipment to find and that is why it is so expensive to hire or buy it.
He also said there are no pressure jet companies locally where jet trucks.
Mr Zuma said sewage spills will be reduced but they are not going to end until the infrastructure has the capacity to take all sewer that is coming from the community.
