Motorists complain about eMbalenhle’s roads

“I have to replace my car parts monthly because of the state of the roads in our township. We are beginning to think the municipality no longer exists,” said Mr Siyabonga Mdhlolo.

The continuous rain has motorists concerned about the state of the roads in eMbalenhle.

They are now also fed-up with Govan Mbeki Municipality’s false promises to repair the roads.

Some claim their vehicles have been damaged because the roads are not being maintained, although politicians promised during the elections to fix the roads.

“Look at the roads around our township!

“It is in a state of disarray. Especially those being damaged by tenderpreneurs,” said Mr Vusi Mthombeni.

“We rely heavily on the Ext 18 road and the Ext 1 road. They were usable before the municipality decided to fix them.

“GMM awarded the tenders to tenderpreneus who damaged these roads and now it is flooded worse after it rains,” said Mr Mthombeni.

Many roads in eMbalenhle are no longer usable to motorists becaused they have either been damaged by the rain or have just not been maintained.

Residents living along the road at Ext 1 have been complaining for two years about the state in which the contractors left their road.

They cannot access their yards with their vehicles.

The road also turned into a dam.At Ext 18, even the side curbs are flooded when it rains.

“I have to replace my car parts monthly because of the state of the roads in our township. We are beginning to think the municipality no longer exists,” said Mr Siyabonga Mdhlolo.

“Even if they are constructing our roads through a tender system, they failed to build water channels that can direct water to the nearby streams.

“I wonder if our municipality has qualified engineers. Let a skills audit be conducted because some of them might possessed fraudulent qualifications,” said Mr Mdhlolo.

The mayor, Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma, told Ridge Times in December that the two eMbalenhle road tenders were in the final process of completion and it would then be advertised for bids from suitable and qualifying contractors.

Mr Donald Green, acting manager of Communication said a tender of rehabilitation of tarred roads in eMbalenhle is still under consideration by bid committees.
He said the municipality understands the public’s frustrations and was doing everything in its power to ensure that the roads are completed.
