Informal rubbish dump in Standerton presents problems

Cattle grazing at the impromptu rubbish dump in Burger Street, Standerton is nothing new.
The Standerton Advertiser saw a cow grazing just before 8:00 on Thursday, February 3.
It happens frequently and the animals loiter in a northern direction from the Standerton River Park to find food.
Surprisingly enough, some residents take both the dump and the stray cattle in their stride.
Motorists still stop regularly to quickly offload a black bag or two or just merrily swing it through the car window.
Lekwa Municipality has challenges with their refuse collection trucks and rubbish recently heaped up in residential areas.
Their removal truck however, was in the vicinity on Thursday at 11:30.

One resident spoke to the newspaper in the past about his asthma problems due to the air pollution.
The communications manager of the municipality, Ms Thobeka Mtshiselwa, previously indicated that the skips were removed after estate agents took the complaints of flat dwellers in a serious light.
The problem is twofold, the health hazard relating to rubbish in streets and the impact of consuming plastic on an animal’s digestive system.
The implications are even wider, plastic pollution has been warned against and Standerton’s image is compromised.
