Sewer spills in eMbalenhle give residents sleepless nights

“We were also told that our pump station is not working, we then ask if they can have a temporary solution until the pump is fix because we don’t know when is going to be repaired.”

eMBALENHLE- Residents of Ext 18, eMbalenhle said unending sewage spills give them sleepless nights.

They said it has been weeks since the sewage began to spills into their houses and even if they report it to Govan Mbeki Municipality, they only get promises.

Some said it is difficult to eat because of the sewage stench.

They claim that it is caused by the poor maintenance from the municipality.

“I reported the spill then they sent their newly bought pressure jet truck but it failed to unblock. Why did the municipality buy this truck?

“We were also told that our pump station is not working. We asked if they had a temporary solution until the pump is fixed.

“They didn’t say anything. We told them to throw down ash for us to access our yards and they promised, but we are still waiting,” said Thomas Masuku.

Residents are afraid that they might catch diseases from the spill.

They want the municipality to prioritise sewage spills because of the health hazards.

Donald Green, acting communication manager of the municipality said sewage spills affecting residents in Ext 19, 20 and surrounding areas, are receiving urgent attention.

“The sanitation team is currently unblocking the sewer system at the Ext 18 pump station,” said Green.
