According to a media statement by the Provincial Commissioner of Police, Messrs Sipho Khumalo (32), Bongani Philemon Mbonani (33) and Bonkosi Mabaso (37) were apprehended in Volksrust.
According to information, the suspects went to a certain farm in Volksrust, driving a red Toyota bakkie with a canopy.
They allegedly stole 24 sheep and information suggested that the sheep were slaughtered and the carcasses and meat starched inside the bakkie.
Some members of the community became suspicious when they saw the bakkie passing.
The vehicle was stopped.
The authorities were immediately notified and the stock theft unit of Wakkerstroom Police searched the vehicle.
Twelve carcasses, as well as a large volume of mutton, were found.
The suspects were charged in connection with possession of suspected stolen property and appeared in the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court on Monday, February 14.
The case was postponed to Monday, February 21 for formal bail application.
The men were remanded in custody.
Lieut-Gen Semakaleng Daphney Manamela said communities have been complaining about stock theft and they took a stance to deal with this challenge.
