Fed up residents stop cars from entering neighbourhood in eMbalenhle

The community wants their councillor to sit next to the sewage and stench from the morning until noon each day, so as to understand the environment to which they are being exposed.

Ext 20 residents in eMbalenhle demand that their councillor, Sydney Sihlalo, fix the sewer that makes their lives difficult daily.

Residents blocked the road with wire and concrete to stop motorists from using it.

They claim that passing cars push the sewage into their yards, hence the blocked off road will remain until the Govan Mbeki Municipality repairs the sewage spill.

Extension 20 residents show use concrete and wire to stop cars accessing their neighbourhood and splashing sewage.

“We have been reporting the spillage since last year.

“We only get false promises.

“The mayor even visited our area and promised to attend to the spills,” said a resident.

“Right now we don’t have roads, some of us are coughing and our children have developed a rash.

“We believe this is because they had played in these sewage dams.

“Our roads are damaged, we have a pre-school here that is also suffering because they have to educate our children under these circumstances,” said the resident.

Donald Green, the acting communications manager for the municipality, said sewage spills affecting residents in eMbalenhle are receiving urgent attention.

“The sanitation team is unblocking the sewer system at various pump stations.

“Residents are urged to prevent sewage spill by not throwing foreign objects into sewer lines and manholes.

“This practice causes damage to infrastructure and ends up posing a threat to human health,” said Green.
