Cullinan artist creates with wire and beads

“You can make art out of everything.”

Rosewitter Tatenda Muwuya from Cullinan found her creativity in making colourful items out of wire and beads.

She has been doing art and crafts for 10 years and to this day, she cannot go a day without creating something.

“It is like I am addicted, every day I make something.”

The wire and beads are available everywhere and are easy to make.

Muwuya loves the texture and according to her, she can sit for hours just forming an idea with her hands.

The items, from large rhinos to small proteas, take about two to three days to make, depending on the size.

The entire process begins in her head just by seeing something that steals her attention.

Handmade proteas.

Muwuya ’s brothers introduced her to this medium when she was still a little girl.

“I have learnt from others and sometimes I just think about something, then I will begin to make it.

“I would sit with them and make wire cars and that is where it all began.”

Muwuya has since been creating every shape you can think of, from wildlife and farm animals and even human figures.

“Since I was in primary school. It was something I do on a daily basis and I do it with passion.”

She showcases all of her handmade art in local markets, but the real excitement comes in the making process.

“When I sit in the sun with a wire and a few beads you will see within an hour how the item gets life after the frame is done.”
