Rose Nkabinde, Ward councillor of Kinross responded to the allegations that were raised by protesters who blocked the R29 with burning tyres and stones on Monday, April 24.
They demanded at the time that Nkabinde resigns as their councillor.
The protesters accused her of being corrupt and claimed that she had stopped a 45m sewer project that was launched by the MEC of Human Settlement, Speedy Mashilo in Ext 30.
They also accused her of allegedly electing a family member as a community liaison officer (CLO) for the sewer project.
Nkabinde was further accused of interfering in the appointment of sub-contractors and making business deals with local companies.
The protesters gave the Govan Mbeki Municipality mayor, Nhkakanipho Zuma, a memorandum containing their complaints.
Zuma gave them feedback on Thursday, April 28.
Nkabinde refuted the allegations against her, claiming that they are malicious.
She said the project was stopped because of community members who did not want the appointed CLO. This person had applied for the position after it was advertised.
“She went through the interview processes and she succeeded,” said Nkabinde.
“As a councillor, I do not have powers to employ people. The CLO of the project is neither my relative nor related to me.
“All this is happening because of a smear campaign against me by the opposition party who is using the Marikana situation in the process. I don’t have any problem with the community,” said Nkabinde.
Nkabinde said she does not have a business or run any business, she said that can be verified through CIPC or SARS.
She said only the African National Congress (ANC) can decide to redeploy her.
Responding to the memorandum at the Kinross municipal office, Zuma said the money that was allocated for the sewer project in Marikana is not enough, because the municipality wants the entire community to live in a dignified manner.
“The project must begin. This is my instruction to the contractor, no one should stop the work from starting.
“If we need to protect it, we will do so,” said Zuma.
