Secunda company challenges other businesses in clean-up drive
One of the biggest concerns during the clean-up was finding balloons on strings which create a hazard for wildlife and birdlife.
Employees from Spirax Sarco Services took to the local Secunda Duck Pond in a volunteer clean-up campaign.
They are now challenging other businesses and stakeholders to play their part in cleaning up areas in and around the town.
Due to the lack of services by Govan Mbeki Municipality, any clean-up effort is purely done by businesses, NPO organisations, volunteers and residents.
There is no funding from GMM and all of the cleaning up is done on a volunteer base and cost.

About 11 volunteers took part in the challenge with 11 refuse bags full of rubbish that were removed.
One of the biggest concerns during the clean-up was finding balloons on strings which create a hazard for wildlife and birdlife.
Speaking to the Ridge Times, Chantél Vorster of Spirax Sarco Services said: “The use of balloons is very bad for the environment. We picked up a lot of balloons with strings on them.”
She said the strings get hooked on the birdlife around the Duckpond and are also a hazard for dog owners who want to walk their dogs.
“Please consider our wildlife and animal life when using balloons,” said Vorster.
She said it is also alarming for an environment which is mainly meant for children to be strewn with broken bottles.

“It is mostly parents that take their children to the Duckpond, but yet it is adults that leave broken bottles lying around,” said Vorster.
She said the amount of broken alcohol bottles lying around is alarming.
“The broken glass bottles are a huge concern because this can cause serious injury not only to children but also to people’s pets,” said Vorster.
