A massive sewage overflow has reached crisis proportions at the intersection of Capriona Street and Wingfield Street.
The Standerton Advertiser is in possession of an email containing correspondence between a resident and the Department of Water and Sanitation in Mpumalanga and Gauteng, as well as reference numbers obtained from the Lekwa Municipality, dating back to June and July last year.
According to the correspondence, the national department has also been contacted.
In a conversation with Jay Pillay on Wednesday, July 20, the dire situation was sketched.
The overflow is coming all the way to Multi Beton on the Leandra Road, impacting all.
Reference numbers 130958, 64292 and 032431 indicate the severity of the problem that has been going on for some time.
According to the correspondence, the main municipal pipes are blocked and were maintained for a while.
Another resident added her voice to the crisis.
“We have tried all we can to fix it with our own resources and it is now a major overflow, that we cannot resolve,” Abigail Munsami said.
“Given the current crisis that we face with the typhoid fever threat, this poses an increased risk to children and the elderly living around it.”
The newspaper sent a WhatsApp-message to Thando Nkosi at the communications department of Lekwa on Friday, July 22, requesting comment.
Readers will be updated on progress in this matter.
