The Department of Social Development Directorate VEP and Prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) identified an organisation in Bronkhorstspruit area, the Mali Martin Polokegong Centre, with whom to celebrate the Nelson Mandela International Day.
A 2km walk against gender-based violence and femicide was held on Monday, July 18, after which the stakeholders were involved at the Mali Martin Polokegong Centre for 67 minutes.
The group engaged in different activities, some were painting, weeding and cleaning at the organisation.
The aim was to provide support, including the recognition of the work done by the organisation, as well as to acknowledge the services that are provided to the community.
Nelson Mandela Day was first launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday in July 2009.
The day was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices.
“With this year’s Mandela Day theme – ‘Do what you can, with what you have, where you are,’ the stakeholders joined hands to do what they could with what they had and where they were,” said Rudo Mahusa, director of the Mali Martin Polokegong Centre.
“We thank all the stakeholders who took part in the day’s activities. The day was well spent,” Mahusa concluded.
