Residents of eMbalenhle want the Govan Mbeki Municipality to take responsibility if electricity poles fall on and injure people or damage property.
Residents have been reporting dangerous poles in the past three years, but have only heard promises to repair them.
They are afraid the cables might topple over in a storm or strong wind and destroy their houses and shacks, or injure one of them.
“Some of these poles were damaged in storms over the past three years and are posing a danger to us and our children,” said resident Vusi Shabangu.
“Even the electricity cables are not properly installed. How can you just let a cable hang above the roof of a house? What will happen if one of this cables snap?” asked Shabangu.
“It looks as if our municipality does not know anything about safety. The community’s safety should be the municipality’s top priority,” said Shabangu.
Donald Green, acting communications manager for the municipality, said the municipality is currently fixing, mounting and replacing falling poles.
He said all pole problems will be attended to in due course.
