Pavement peddlers in Standerton brought to book
According to Alberto Franco, altogether 15 arrests were made in connection with illegal entry to the country and another three people were arrested in connection with illegal employment.
The shack owners on the pavements in town that do business selling anything from fruit and vegetables to clothes and shoes, were in for a surprise the past week.
Lekwa Municipality, the traffic department and the Department of Home Affairs, made sure that compliance to legislation was carried out.
According to Alberto Franco, DA-councillor, 15 arrests were made in connection with illegal entry to the country and another three people were arrested in connection with illegal employment.
The exercise was carried out at the taxi rank and the Oriental Plaza.
“It will be done continuously as a legitimate government has the right to use reasonable force to enforce the law,” Franco said.
More than one businessman have commented in the past on these small enterprises that do not contribute to the coffers of the municipality.
They were not held accountable for any rates and taxes.
