Community stops Charl Cilliers water project
The same reservoir was disconnected from supplying water to the area after residents complained that the water was contaminated with algae and worms in 2018.
eMBALENHLE Community members of Ward 10 that includes Ext 15 and Ext 17 stopped the Charl Cilliers water pipeline project on Monday, November 21.
This pipeline will supply the Charl Cilliers community with water from the Ext15 reservoir and is funded by Sasol through its Social Labour Plan.
These community members are demanding that the project’s steering committee be disbanded and a new committee be elected.
Community members said they will stop the project until the management of the Govan Mbeki Municipality listens to their grievances.
“We don’t get businesses and employment opportunities because of some members of the steering committee who have interests while claiming to represent us.
“The companies that are working on the project either belong to the steering committee members or the friends of councillors.
“In 2018, the municipality handed over the reservoir while it was incomplete because there were the same problems,” said a resident.
The same reservoir was disconnected from supplying water to the area after residents complained that the water was contaminated with algae and worms in 2018. Residents said it is the same reservoir where little red worms were floating in their tap water.
The ward councillor, Lucky Ngwenya, said the problem was reported to the MMC for Planning and Development in the Govan Mbeki Municipality, Thandi Ngxonono.
The newspaper contacted the communication department for comment and was told that the matter is receiving attention from the relevant departments.
