Business owners and the community decided to step up and began cleaning and cutting grass in Standerton as the Lekwa Municipality fail to do so.
These residents and business owners founded the Lekwa Clean Up Crew (LCUC), a non-profit organisation in 2016.
The spokesman of LCUC, Suzelle Kemp, said apart from cleaning certain areas and cutting the grass, they also remove the refuse, illegal posters on lamp posts and clean the stormwater drains according to what their budget allows.
This organisation is dependent on the community for donations.
“We do it for the safety of our residents, not only so that our town can look better,” said Kemp.
She said after the global lockdown and Covid-19 pandemic, many businesses in Standerton are suffering and as a result, they contributed less to the LCUC.
“If we do not get enough money through donations from businesses and the community, we can do less in our town as we can then only pay a few workers.”
The LCUC organisation is also a form of job creation. They also clean the area at Rivierpark to make sure the area is clean and safe for the parkrunners every Saturday when the Standerton parkrun takes place.
They launched a project to fix potholes, but it was a difficult project as they need engineers to give advice on the pothole situation in Standerton as some roads is in such a bad state that it would have to be tarred over completely and it would cost millions.
