City of Tshwane faces police charge for pollution in Bronkhorstspruit

The pump station in Bronkhorstspruit does not work properly, so a case was opened against the City of Tshwane.

The Mpumalanga Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) opened a police case against the City of Tshwane for polluting the waterways in Bronkhorstspruit.

The charge of contravening the Water Conservation Act comes after officials from the DWS visited the sewage pump station in Bronkhorstspruit on November 16 to investigate a complaint received about broken sewage pumps.

Bronkhorstspruit’s raw sewerage is fed to the pump station on Lanham Street just below the taxi rank, while these pumps feed the reticulation plant on Durley plots.

When the pumps do not work, the raw sewerage does not flow to the reticulation plant but spills directly into the river at several points.

Residents claim mechanical breakdowns and a lack of maintenance by the municipality led to the pump station not working.

Streek News contacted the DWS to find out what could be done to resolve the problem but had not received any information at the time of going to press.
