Opposition accuses the GMM mayor of using municipal resources to campaign
The DA claim the programme is used for electioneering and that nothing has changed since it started years ago.
Opposition parties have accused Govan Mbeki Municipality Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma of using municipality service delivery resources to campaign for the ANC.
These parties slammed Zuma during the council meeting held on February 29. They claimed Zuma used his mayoral cleaning campaign to secure votes in the Ward 4 by-election.
Zuma and other ANC members were seen wearing ANC regalia while working for this municipal programme known as Ijima Lokuhlwengisa.
“It must be clear that Ijima Lokuhlwengisa is a municipal programme, not an ANC initiative.
“It is disgusting to see an MMC or councillor wear party regalia while we are in a service delivery programme by the municipality.
“Politicians are misusing the municipality’s technical service department. This is the misuse of our community resources,” said EFF Clr Wilson Chauke.
The DA claims the programme is a campaigning stunt, and nothing has changed since it began several years ago.
“In all the municipality’s areas where the programme was rolled out, garbage is still piling up every day, and the illegal dumping is still a challenge because of the non-collection of waste. Cleaning is the municipality’s daily task – not only during a cleaning campaign,” said DA Clr James Masango.
Zuma replied that all political parties, except the Freedom Front Plus, wear their political regalia during the campaign and that it is not for politics but to service the community.
