Family seek justice after hit-and-run in eMbalenhle

Siyabonga Ngcobo (27) was killed in a hit-and-run near eMbalenhle Mall early in February.

The Ngcobo family in eMbalenhle accuses the eMbalenhle police of dragging its feet in apprehending the motorist who drove over their family member.

Siyabonga Ngcobo (27) was killed in a hit-and-run near eMbalenhle Mall early in February. According to Siyabonga’s mother, Nomadlozi Ngcobo, her son was with friends at the mall when an unknown motorist drove over him.

He died at the Ext 4 Clinic. Ngcobo claims the investigating officer does not update the family about the case.

She says not knowing what was happening forced her to go to the eMbalenhe Police Station and ask for an update, only to hear that nothing had changed. She was then allegedly told to let things go.

Siyabonga Ngcobo was killed in a hit-and-run at the eMbalenhle Mall on February 4.

“I asked the investigating officer about the postmortem results, but he did not even know if the results were out yet.

“He did not want to check either. He gave me the pathology office number instead, telling me to check on it myself.”

Ngcobo has not yet contacted the pathologists. She doubts they would release any details to her without the investigating officer’s written approval.

“We buried my son, but we want justice for him,” said Ngcobo.

Ngcobo said Siyabonga’s friends are unable to describe the car that killed her son.

Constable Busi Mthethwa confirmed the incident and said the local clinic called the SAPS about a man who died upon arrival and asked them to come to the clinic.

Mthethwa said the clinic’s health workers told the police a car hit the deceased, and they opened a culpable homicide case.

Mthethwa said the case is still under investigation.
