Commuters to Kinross complain about taxi patrollers

A woman got dismissed from her work because of being late every day.

Commuters working in Kinross, who must hitchhike to work, cry foul over daily harassment by taxi patrollers of the Vukanini Taxi Association (Vukta).

According to some, they have to be at work early. They have to resort to hitchhiking because no taxis are travelling to Kinross at that time in the morning.

Fanie Mavuso clocks in at 04:00 at the Kinross Sasol Club. He has to walk almost 2km each morning from his home in Ext 1, eMbalenhle, to Khaya Mall.

Mavuso said sometimes taxis would pick up a mixture of commuters headed to Evander and Kinross. However, when they reach Evander, those destined for Kinross are also told to get out because the taxi is not going all the way to Kinross.

“We do not have another option but to hitchhike. If motorists try to help us, the Vukta taxi patrollers take their car keys,” said Mavuso.

“Our employers do not understand what we go through to come to work,” said Mavuso.

The Vukanini Taxi Association management said they were unaware of the challenges of commuters working in Kinross because no one brought it to their attention.

According to Lucky Skosana, rank manager of the association, throughout Govan Mbeki municipal there are taxis at every rank that can take commuters to Kinross.

Skosana said they would give immediate attention to the problem. He asked concerned commuters to go to Vukta’s offices in eMbalenhle.
