Family mourns loss of beloved Siyabonga

The suspects’ bail application in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on May 28 was unsuccessful, and the case was postponed to June 5.

The family of Siyabonga Vilakazi will lay their loved one to rest on June 1.

According to a close relative, the 28-year-old was at his residence in Rooikoppen late in April when a fight broke out among other residents.

Vilakazi tried to stop the incident.

Three men then held him down and beat him with a large rock and multiple other weapons. Vilakazi was admitted to Standerton Hospital with a large head wound and bruises all over his face.

He was later transported to Ermelo Hospital, where he died from his injuries on May 27, nearly a month after the incident.

According to family members, Siyabonga Vilakazi loved to dance.

A family member of the victim remembers him fondly.

“Siyabonga was a busy man who loved to help people,” she said.

Vilakazi was working towards his security certificate and was reportedly a protector by nature. He leaves behind his son, who is six years old.

The suspects’ bail application in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on May 28 was unsuccessful, and the case was postponed to June 5.

“We can only hope that justice for our brother, son and father will be served,” was the family’s final comment.
