Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant operates at low capacity
The Bronkhorstspruit treatment plant is experiencing problems to supply water to certain areas around Bronkhorstspruit.
Certain areas of Ekangala have been without water for weeks because of malfunctioning pumps at the water treatment plant.
The area is part of three townships in the Bronkhorstspruit area that have not received a consistent water supply since 2023.
Residents in the high-lying areas have been complaining since last year about the water supply. Bronkhorstspruit and nearby areas received a notice about an interruption of operations at the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant.
The regional head of Region 7, Jabu Mabona said, “The said plant has been operating at a very low capacity over the last three weeks because of equipment failure at the raw water pump station and unforeseen power outages.”

Repair work is currently underway. However, there are delays in completing the work, because of the lead time required to source some spares and materials from suppliers.
Meanwhile, the plant is also experiencing an electrical fault on the supply side, which causes a trip at the raw water pump station.
The plant is currently non-operational. The city’s technicians are investigating the fault point on the network to restore the electricity supply and ultimately resume operations. The estimated time of repair is currently unknown.
The Bronkhorstspruit Treatment Plant cannot produce enough water to fill the reservoirs to a level to provide water to the high-lying areas while there are still water leaks.
“Repairs were done at the raw water plant, which was from the pipes drawing water from the river,” said Mabona.
