Karatekas from Kinross shine at championship in Durban

Two go to Commonwealth Games in Bangladesh.

Students from the Universal Shotokan Karate Union (USKU) and the SKISA Three Sword Club (Standerton) competed in the South African Open Development Championship, held in Tongaat, Durban on July 20.

Melyne Sehar (SKISA) finished first in the girls’ kumite – 30kg (8-9 years) category and third in the girls’ kata (7-9 years) category.

Sbongokuhle Mahlangu (USKU) finished third in the boys’ kumite – 30kg (8-9 years) category and Akani Mbambo (USKU) finished second in the boys’ kumite +30kg (8-9 years) category.



Jaden Malaza (USKU) finished third in the boys’ kumite – 30kg (8-9 years) category and Amelia Sehar (SKISA) finished second in the elite division in the girls’ kumite – 40kg (10-11 years) category.

Ricardo Van Wyngaard (SKISA) finished second in the boys’ kumite -35kg (10-11 years) category.

Sehar and Van Wyngaard are also selected for the national team that will represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Games in Bangladesh in September.
