Entities in Bronkhorstspruit spotlight human trafficking

“This crime, which happens anywhere in the world, can affect men, women and children of all ages and backgrounds.”

Various entities launched an anti-human trafficking campaign at the Bronkhorstspruit Taxi Rank on October 11.

The aim was to alert the community about the acts of enlisting, transferring, harbouring or receiving someone under duress, fraud or deception, intending to abuse them for financial gain, commonly known as human trafficking.

The Office of Social Crime Prevention, the Mali Martin Polokegong Centre, the departments of Health and Community Safety, the CPF, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the Tshwane Municipality (Kungwini, Region 7), the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, the University of Pretoria, the TMPD, the MPD and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Gauteng Hawks) held the campaign.

“This crime, which happens anywhere in the world, can affect men, women and children of all ages and backgrounds. To fool and persuade their victims, human traffickers frequently resort to violence, phoney employment agencies and false promises of education and work possibilities,” said Constable Cathrine Ramovha, the corporate communication officer for the Bronkhorstspruit SAPS, in a media statement released on October 11.

During the campaign, the SAPS urged community members to notify the authorities of any suspicious criminal activity.
