Sewage builds up in property in eMzinoni

eMzinoni ext23 resident Mandla Ndinisa has been battling with sewage in his property for nearly three months and says the matter has been reported to GMM many times.

An unbearable stench of sewage is what greets you when you enter the property of Mandla Ndinisa living in Ext23.

Ndinisa’s son Mfundo contacted the Ridge Times saying that they had made numerous attempts to contact Govern Mbeki Municipality (GMM) and had even gone to the municipal offices in Bethal to report the matter.

Nearly three months later when the first complaint was made, the flow of sewage in the property is now getting worse.

So much so it is going into the neighbour’s yard and adjourning field where cattle graze. When the Ridge Times went to investigate Ndinisa said: “It has been like this for so long now that the water is changing colour.”

He said there is nowhere for the sewage to go and that it is now going into the neighbour’s yard. This is besides the sewage going into the field next to the property.

“The rubbish in the field does not help either. It is blocking the sewage from flowing,” said Ndinisa.

Ndinisa said every call made to GMM they are told “We will inform them”, however, nothing is being done.

According to Ndinisa GMM even told him a truck would come and drain the sewage, but to date, no trucks have arrived. The sewage is to the extent that it is now flowing to Mfundo’s shack at the back of the property.

“The smell is not okay. It makes you very sick. When the wind blows the smell is very bad and the flies are everywhere. We can’t open our doors or windows because of the smell and flies that come into the house,” said Ndinisa.

Responding to the Ridge Times enquiries, Donald Green, spokesperson for GMM said GMM apologises to the family and any other family who have been inconvenienced by the sewer spillage in and around that area.

“The sewer team is working on the complaint and we will give feedback as soon as possible,” said Green.

He said that GMM takes complaints seriously and is committed to resolving them within its specified service level standards unless unforeseen challenges arise.

GMM appeal to residents to report spillage of sewage or water to the municipal customer call centre on 0800 6000 01/2/4 or send a WhatsApp message to 083 790 0659/082 343 2422 for a speedy response and resolving the problem.
