Govan Mbeki Municipality now has money to upgrade sewerage systems

Mayor believes project will be finished by June 2027.

Nhlakanipho Zuma, mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, said the sewer spillages in eMbalenhle were a concern for the municipality.

He reported the municipality attempted to secure funding to fix the problem.

According to him, a study indicated they needed a proper intervention that requires sufficient money and submitted it to the Mpumalanga Department of Water and Sanitation.

“The eMbalenhle sewerage spillage eradication requires us as the municipality to upgrade the eMbalenhle wastewater treatment plant, which currently has a capacity of 9.6ML and 46ML raw sewerage and cannot cater to the needs of the eMbalenhle community,” said Zuma.

“We revamped the eMbalenhle sewer pump stations in different areas but these pump stations will not be effective unless we can upgrade our treatment plant. The pump station project in Ext 24, which failed previously, will be completed as we allocated money for the project.

“We are also going to upgrade the sewer network lines that currently cannot carry the capacity of raw sewerage.”

The sewerage project in eMbalenhle will be done through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), and the Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) will be the implementing agent.

“The municipality has to submit certain policies and plans to the district to start the work. We believe the work will begin by the beginning of next year.”

He estimates that this project will be finished by June 2027.
