GS College celebrates graduates in Standerton

Gert Sibande TVET College Skills Academy and Artisan Development Centre hosted a graduation ceremony in partnership with Seriti.

More than 400 students who had completed skills development programmes in Standerton and Kriel attended the event.

The ceremony was at the Isiqalo Waterfront Lodge on November 7 and marks the successful completion of basic skills training.

The skills programmes consisted of various areas of study including engineering and soft skills with trades such as electrical fitting, robotics, fire fighting, health and safety, CCTV, project management and many more.

“The skills programme is a key component of Seriti Coal’s New Denmark Colliery Social Labor Plan (SLP). As a responsible business, we strive to bridge the skills gap affecting the youth of Lekwa.

“Our objective through this initiative is to tackle unemployment, foster small and medium-sized enterprises and invest in human capital development,” said Seriti Kriel training manager Rajesh Jaganandan.

According to a media statement, there was a notable increase in women enrolling in engineering courses, which demonstrated a step towards greater diversity in the field. Participants received certificates and starter toolboxes to kickstart them in their future careers.

“This event embodies the government’s vision for public-private partnerships. We are grateful to Seriti for their invaluable support, which has made this initiative a reality.

“Collaborations like these will contribute to building a better future for our country,” said Bafana Motha, acting deputy principal of academic services.

Lucia Mgcina, a graduate of GS College’s computer programme, delivered an inspiring address on the students’ behalf, expressing gratitude towards the GS College, Seriti and all roleplayers.

“This opportunity has equipped us with invaluable skills. We understand our responsibility to leverage these skills effectively and make meaningful, lasting impacts in our communities,” she concluded.

This milestone is a testament to the graduates’ hard work and dedication.
