Local karatekas bag medals at 11th Commonwealth Karate Championships in Durban
Lutendo Netshivhazwaulu received first place in the girls (10 -11 years) 50kg and under.
Local students from the Universal Shotokan Karate Union claimed top spots in the 11th Commonwealth Karate Championships, held at the Olive Centre in Durban, from November 30 until December 1.
Students from 23 countries competed in the championships. Five of the 14 students from USKU received top spots.
South Africa finished first with 51 gold, 41 silver and 70 bronze, bringing its total to 162 medals. In second place was India with 91 medals and Australia third with 34 medals.
USKU student Mitchell Malaza finished third in the Cadet girls (14-15 years) 61kg and over category. Thabani Sindane received the third spot in the boys (12 – 13 years) under 55kg category.
Hlumelo Gxarisa came in third place in the boys (10 – 11 years) 50kg and over category. Lutendo Netshivhazwaulu received first place in the girls (10 -11 years) 50kg and under.
