Trichardt teen takes the top spot in SPL Helivate HeliOlympics

Richard Ingram (17) finished first in the Student Pilot License (SPL) category of the ninth Helivate annual HeliOlympics held in December with his grandfather Jan van Rooyen as his navigator.

With the goal of a future career, Richard Ingram (17) is determined to get another step closer to getting his pilot’s license.

He received first place in the student pilot license (SPL) category during the ninth Helivate annual HeliOlympics. It was an even greater win for Richard as he could share the experience with his navigator, his grandfather, Jan van Rooyen.

“Experiencing this event with my grandfather as the navigator has been an incredible bonding experience,” said Richard.

The HeliOlympics was held at the Jack Taylor airfield in Krugersdorp on December 7. This annual event is a platform where pilots hone their skills, challenge themselves, and push their limits.

Richard Ingram (17) competed in the Helivate annual HeliOlympics.

“Many participants return year after year, eager to claim the trophy, while others graduate from SPL (student pilot license) to PPL (private pilot license), showcasing the progression in their flying abilities,” said Hayley Cumming, CEO of Helivate Helicopter Services.

She said the HeliOlympics is more than just a competition.

“It is a chance to grow as pilots, build camaraderie, and celebrate the passion for aviation. Watching participants improve year after year is inspiring and a testament to their dedication and hard work,” said Cumming.

Richard said besides the technical aspects of flying, the experience has taught him the importance of attention to detail and decision-making under pressure.

“I have developed good decision-making skills. It has also been a lot of fun and has allowed me to see the world from a different perspective,” said Richard.

Growing up, Richard gained his love for helicopters through the stories told by his father, Maverick Hammond, who specialises in armed forces and security.

“I always wanted to be that guy in the helicopter that flies in the AC/DC videos. When you hear my dad and the stories he would tell of his experiences in helicopters and how they work; is how I grew a passion and love for it,” said Richard.

Richard took four months to do his first solo. From there, he did his level two class medical, which is a requirement, in January 2024. He can qualify for his private pilot’s license at 50 hours or more. He now has around 70 hours and has to complete eight exams, of which he has done two. These exams are done at Secunda’s Aviation Junction.
