Evander residents left powerless and dry

Food starts rotting because of power failures.

Angry residents are left powerless as Govan Mbeki Municipality has not managed to fix cable faults for more than nine days.

“Our meat and food are going down, who is going to replace it?” asked a resident.

According to a statement by the municipality, the latest update on the electricity is that the power supply will remain off to parts of Evander including the area between Elias Motswaledi Street and Bristol Street.

This comes as a result of multiple faults on the cable network. According to DA councillor, Ansie van Marlé, initially municipal officials said it was a problem with the transformer.

“So my question is, what happened with the transformer now? Was it fixed and when did the cable problems now slip in?”

People had to throw away their food that started rotting as a result of the electricity outage in Evander.

According to Van Marlé, the municipality got two new transformers in August last year. “A rumour was doing the rounds that they were refurbished transformers and not brand new.”

In a statement from Govan Mbeki Municipality on January 7, the electricity problems were caused by suspected attempted theft which left two new transformers that the municipality got in August, severely damaged.

The statement further read that tests were done successfully and the transformer was energised without any challenges. In the meantime, Evander residents have also been left with dry taps since last Thursday night.

“I reported it to the municipality and they just said the water is pumping from the reservoir, but somehow the water is not getting to the houses.”

Van Marlé said sometimes it is difficult to get answers from the municipality.
