‘Metro cop’ nabbed for alleged N12 hijacking

A white VW Golf 7 with flashing blue lights on the dash and a siren emerged from behind.

Hennie Mabasa, a 36-year-old metro police officer, appeared in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court after he was arrested in connection with a hijacking on the N12 in the Sundra region.

Mabasa’s appearance in court on January 17 follows an incident on January 15 at around 02:00. According to Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, spokesperson for the police in Mpumalanga, employees from a courier company were driving along the N12 near Sundra on January 15.

The two armed men escorted two company trucks in a Mitsubishi bakkie.

According to Ndubane, a white VW Golf 7 with flashing blue lights on the dash and a siren emerged from behind, forcing the bakkie driver to stop. Four people dressed in metro uniforms awaited the driver as he got out of the bakkie.

Ndubane said the suspects ordered the driver to produce his driver’s license.

A metro police uniform was sealed for investigation.

“However, when the suspects realised the driver was armed, they also instructed him and his colleague to hand over their firearms.”

According to the information, the driver removed the magazine from his rifle and handed it over.

“The driver then went to his vehicle and suddenly heard a rifle cocking. One suspect grabbed the driver and told him to hand over the magazine of his pistol,” a reliable source told Streeknews.

Thereafter, the suspects held the two colleagues at gunpoint, ordering them to lie down in front of the Golf 7.

They loaded the driver into the Golf and two of the suspects, including a woman, got into the car and started driving around.

They later dropped off the driver on Nel Street in Sundra. Meanwhile, the remaining two suspects drove off in the Mitsubishi with the co-worker.

They left the co-worker on the R42 with the Mitsubishi and no key. He did, however, contact his manager.

At around 06:00 the same morning, Sundra police spotted a white Golf stuck in the mud on Davis Road, Sundra.

Four suspects ran away, but the police caught one. The suspect allegedly explained he was lost, but later changed his story to that of being a hijacking victim.

Police then took him back to the Golf, where a satellite tracking company awaited them. The hijacking victim informed the police about what happened, and after Mabasa was detained.

“Items stolen from the Mitsubishi include a rifle with 30 rounds and a pistol with 15 rounds,” Ndubane also said.

“Mabasa’s accomplices are still at large and are being sought by the police.”

The reliable source told Streeknews that one more suspect was arrested during the early morning hours of January 16; this information could, however, not be confirmed.

Mabasa is still behind bars and, at the time of going to print, was expected to appear in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court on January 23 for a formal bail application.

The reliable source also informed Streeknews that Mabaso allegedly is a bodyguard of the Tshwane metro police chief, Commissioner Yolanda Faro.
