Municipality fixes water leak in Standerton
The municipality advised the community to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure. This is due to high turbidity levels in the Vaal River, which are currently impacting water quality.

The Lekwa Local Municipality (LMM) recently completed work on a water leak in the River Park near the chalets on the premises.
According to Leon Enslin, the chairperson of AfriForum Standerton, the leak had run for weeks, wasting thousands of litres of clean water.
According to Lubabalo Majenge, the LMM spokesperson, multiple factors, including corrosion, pressure, weather conditions and aged infrastructure, caused the leak.
Payment for the water loss remains LMM’s responsibility.
“The aged infrastructure will require a substantial amount of money to replace. Currently, the short-term solution would be to attend to the water leaks as they are reported,” added Majenge.
Reporting leaks is vital to prevent water loss. In the meantime, the municipality also sent out a warning for people to boil water as a precautionary measure.

The increased turbidity has led to the accumulation of sludge in the sedimentation tanks and frequent backwashing is required.
Regular testing and monitoring of water quality are being conducted in accordance with South African National Standards (SANS 241) and relevant guidelines.
