The police detectives were on their way to arrest a man and his accomplices in connection with several robbery cases, when he shot at them.

Police shot and wounded a 23-year-old man in the leg after he opened fire on them in Ext 15, eMbalenhle, on February 10.

According to eMbalenhle police spokesperson Constable Busi Mthethwa, Detective Warrant Officer Melusi Mthombeni and Detective Constable Pieter Ramutla received a tip-off about the whereabouts of suspects believed to be part of a gang wanted for house and business robberies in eMbalenhle.
Mthethwa said that when the suspect saw the detectives approaching, he allegedly pulled out a firearm and began shooting at them.
The officers returned fire, wounding him in the leg.
Despite his injury, the suspect managed to escape but was later arrested at a private doctor’s surgery in Extension 11, eMbalenhle.
He is currently under police guard at Evander Hospital. His firearm was also confiscated by the police.
