Calista saddles up in Rayton for cancer

“This initiative is more than a solitary endeavor; it is a collective moment, and I invite the public to stand with us in solidarity.”

Calista Schütte, a 24-year-old equestrian and resident of the Donkerhoek/Rayton area, took it upon herself to join the Canter4Cancer fundraising initiative.

She accepted the challenge to complete a 400km horseback ride in 90 days to raise money for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

Schütte and her horse, Zorse, began this journey on World Cancer Day, February 4, traversing various terrain from the scenic hillsides of Cullinan, tranquil fields of Donkerhoek and the bustling streets of Rayton.

Schütte told the Streeknews that Professor Cheryl McCrindle owns Zorse.

“Her name is actually CK Azreal, but she goes by the nickname ‘Zorse’. She tends to sweat a lot, leaving her with white saltpetre stripes that make her look much like a zebra.

“My mother was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in 2011. A double mastectomy, chemo- and radiation therapy and massive amounts of positivity are why I believe she is still with us 14 years later,” Schütte told the Streeknews.

“For that reason, Cansa is a cause close to my heart. Every stride on this demanding challenge symbolises the unwavering determination required in the fight against cancer,” said Schütte.

“This journey is not just a physical feat but a testament to the resilience and courage of those battling cancer – the daily persistency of one step at a time.

“I aim to do 25km per day, but it has become quite a challenge with the persistent rain. Zorse has a fear of water puddles, and that is a bit of an obstacle to overcome.

“We have 320km left, but I am confident the sun will soon shine, and we’ll make up for the lost time because of the wet terrain.

“I constantly remind myself that this journey is not just a physical feat, but a testament to the resilience and courage of those battling the relentless disease”

Mom Beverly Kaffka explained that this initiative is more than a solitary endeavour; it is a collective moment.

Beverley Kaffka receive some tender loving care from Zorse.

“I invite the public to stand with us in solidarity. By supporting this ride, you are contributing to a larger cause that touches lives far and wide,” said Kaffka.

By sponsoring Schütte and Zorse, the public will support Cansa’s dedication to research, advocacy and patient support evident since 1931.

“Your generosity in sponsoring Calista and Zorse will directly fuel groundbreaking research, enhance patient care and extend vital support to families affected by cancer,” Kaffka added.
