Bronkhorstspruit SAPS continue to search schools
During the search, it however became apparent that some learners had a strong cigarette odour.
The Bronkhorstspruit Police conducted school searches on February 19 at Mkhambi Primary School in Sokhulumi Village and the Cultura High School in Cultura Park.
The police seized nothing at both schools, but cautioned learners about bullying and smoking.
The Bronkhorstspruit visible policing commander Lieutenant Colonel Sibonisile Mlaba, went to Mshuluzane Maisela Primary School in Zithobeni on February 26.
Accompanied by officials from the Department of Community Safety, traffic wardens and CPF members, the group embarked on a school talk and search.
“This follows reports of challenges at the school such as bullying, fighting and smoking,” said Constable Cathrine Ramovha, corporate communications officer for Bronkhorstspruit SAPS.
“The team told the learners to avoid bullying and fighting each other or learners from other schools. Additionally, the team cautioned the learners not to associate with any gangsterism,” Ramovha added.
According to Ramovha, officers searched 15 learners. During the search, it became apparent that some learners had a strong cigarette odour.

“After identifying learners who were smoking, the team gave these learners cash.”
The learners then led the team to the store where they normally purchase cigarettes. Ramovha stated although the learners were in school uniforms, the shopkeeper sold cigarettes to them.
“Officers warned the learners about buying cigarettes and smoking. The school will monitor the smokers who were identified and deal with the matter,” Ramovha added.
“The team also warned learners to avoid becoming ‘touchy-touchy’ with one another and that no one may touch their private areas. Such incidents must immediately be reported to parents or teachers.”
Ravoha said the shop owner who sold cigarettes to minors in their school uniforms will be charged under the Tobacco Products Control Act.
“To maintain safety, police will continue to visit local schools,” Ramovha concluded.
